Sheares Hall Farewell-Cum-Welcome Dinner

On 4 October 2003, Sheares Hall bade farewell to the universityÕs longest-serving Hall Master, Dr Lawrence Chia, for 33 years of leadership at the helm. The dinner was also an opportunity to welcome the hallÕs new Master, Dr Gary Tan, and to formally introduce him to the hallÕs alumni.

Held at the Kent Ridge Guild House, the dinner saw a packed ballroom of 21 tables comprising current Shearites and alumni of both Sheares Hall and her predecessor hall, Dunearn Road Hostels (DRH), as well as current and ex-Senior Common Room Committee (SCRC) members, university administration staff and members of the Sheares family.

Among the highlights of the evening were sharing by DRH and Sheares Hall alumni on their impressions of Dr Chia, a multimedia presentation, the presentation of a souvenir gift to Dr Chia, a skit based on a story that was passed on by seniors to freshmen at orientation during DRH days, and the symbolic passing of a baton from Dr Chia to Dr Tan.

In support of the hall, alumnus Wan Heng Yuen (DRH alumnus who had travelled all the way from Kuala Lumpur with his wife and fellow Dunearnite, Pui Wan) represented the alumni in presenting a cheque to Dr Tan. The contribution will go towards the DRH-SH Special Anniversary Award, which was established at the hallÕs special anniversary celebration last year.

The evening came to a rousing end with the DRH and SH anthems being sung in turn, and a friendly cheering competition between the Dunearnites and the Shearites. It was an unforgettable night of laughter and fond memories for one and all.
