It was Professor Arthur Lim who mooted the idea of a debate between
the doctors and the lawyers as a social event. The topic That
lawyers make better politicians than doctors was agreed upon
and battle lines were drawn.
The
debate was held in the auditorium of Parliament House on 11 July 2003.
The event was preceded by a high tea and was eagerly attended by many
anticipating an entertaining evening. Dr Catherine Lim was the chairperson
and moderator while Mrs Fang Ai Lian was the chief judge.
The lawyers dressed in white, and one in a blue windbreaker informed
the house that the team that was so dressed in Parliament was always
the winner. The tone was thus set for a light-hearted debate which was
even frivolous at times. The lawyers even bribed the judges with flowers
openly.
The medical team, consisting of junior consultants dressed in suits,
was too proper in dress and presentation. It was quite obvious that
they had lost their debating skills to evidence based medicine.
The doctors really lost out on wit and clever rebuttal to the lawyers.
In summary, the chief judge observed that this was a debate between
angels and scumbags, and scumbags won the day.
