Developing Friendship Worldwide
Through the NUS Host Family Programme
With the help of local hosts, the Host Family Programme (HFP) administered by the Office of Student Affairs has assisted many of the University's international students in adjusting to the Singaporean life and culture.
An interactive scheme, the HFP provides a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange and friendship between the hosts and their students. Some of the activities the hosts and students have shared include outings to historical sites and places of interest, or simply having a meal together.
We would like to extend to all NUS alumni the opportunity to befriend our international students, so that they can interact with the local community and experience a friendly welcome. In return, you will not only have an opportunity to learn about the culture, lifestyle and attractions of your students' home countries, but also uniquely experience Singapore through them. Currently, there are undergraduate and non-graduating (exchange) students from more than 40 countries studying at NUS.
An adventurous ride around Pulau Ubin for Henrik Strand from Norway. Hosting him is alumnus Yesaya Wen. Says Yesaya: "HFP gives me an invaluable insight into a human experience set in a distinct cultural background. This insight at the same time makes me realise that human aspirations are universal despite cultural diversity."
Host Jacqueline Chow and her student from Canada, Esther Tan, at the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations held at the Chinese Garden. Shares Jacqueline: "It is indeed a valuable and enriching experience as I was able to learn more about other cultures. I also enjoy their company during meals and showing them around Singapore."
Student Veronique Collin from France attending the Chinese wedding dinner of her host, Patricia Cheung.
