The recent launch of the Mentorship Programme by Building & Estate
Management Alumni Committee (BEMA) is timely in view of the current
job market uncertainty. Under this new initiative, final year graduating
students from the School of Design and Environment can now seek career
advice and counselling from professionals in various disciplines in
building and real estate. Available job offers are also posted online
on the BEMA website www.bema.org.sg.
To manage this programme, a new mentorship sub-committee was set up
by the 10th executive committee, chaired by BEMA president, Dr Teo Ho
Pin, who is also Mayor of North West CDC District and MP for Holland-Bukit
Panjang GRC.
The sub-committee currently has more than 30 mentors, who are well
established in professions ranging from project management, contracts
administration, quantity surveying, property management, town planning
to property marketing.
The sub-committee is also looking into the development of an Internet-based
mentorship programme using the BEMA website. Hosting the programme
online will be the most convenient mode of exchange for both the professions
and the students, said Mohd Khairuddin, chairman of the sub-committee.
With the number of mentors increasing, it will avoid the administrative
and logistic aspects that come with manual matching as students will
be able to select the mentor of their choice online.
